This second cable on Nick's valve is puzzling me. I can't think why it would be required, because there's only one valve. I can only guess that they didn't use the same solid cables on the 407. The point being that the solid core control cable is able to push the valve actuator as well as pull it.

Nick, are you absolutely sure that lower cable is connected to the valve?

I have attached some detailed photos of a valve from an Aston. I suspect the internals are interchangeable. From memory I think the original one which came off my DB6 had a separate diaphragm spring, but if you take yours apart you should be able to see whether the diaphragm with the retained spring will work as a replacement in your valve body.

You might be able to buy that diaphragm separately, but even if you can't do that, you can buy the Spitfire/GT6 valve for circa £20 and just use the parts.
