Got to the switch today. You were right. Although superficially clean the mechanism was jammed. It took a lot of lubricating to get it running again (probably for the first time in 30 years). Incidentally it didn't like dry chain grease!

Got it reassembled and added the repeater light. No more driving along with the indicator on.
