403 fog lamp relay
A simple question this time, where is the relay located?
I've searched around the cabin and can't find it, but I'm sure someone has! |
403 Foglamp relay
The relay is mounted on the left hand side of the dash mounting bracket, behind the rev. counter.
Not the easiest thing to get at - (unless like me you have the whole dashboard out) Have fun... Mike |
Thanks Mike,
I'm going to fit a pair of motorcycle units to the sides of the number plate aperture (seen it on another 401/3 & impressed). Would it be better to use the brake lights there or on the outside for fog lights? or would I be better off with four brake lights? My feeling is that the motorcycle units would be too small for a continuous 20 watt bulb. Regards, Peter |

When you move away from the original design it's obviously all down to personal taste. I am hoping to stay within the original parameters by using L.E.Ds. I have made units that will fit in the original lamps and give me stop/tail, reverse and indicators. Not much heat from L.E.Ds and very low power drain. From the safety angle, the more light at the back the better and also the nearer to the outside of the car. Not sure if there are any dictating legal requirements but I don't suppose you would run into any problems in that direction Best Mike |
It's a little late for that! It had been fitted with Mini Estate light clusters by the time I bought it.
But I would like opinions on whether it is better to have four brake lights or two and two fog lamps. Regards, Peter |
Four brake lights
Are you sure that four brake lights are allowed at all?
In certain European countries three is a legal maximum. |
As it doesn't require an MOT test anymore in the UK, who cares as long as it works ! :-)

From what I can understand, the legislation only deals with minimums, so as a pre 1971 car it is only required to have one brake light. If it is equipped with a rear fog lamp it must be mounted between the centre and off side but that does not preclude having additional lights.
