401 Part - does anyone recognise this?
1 Attachment(s)
After more than a year of inactivity I have got back to restoring my 401.
Unfortunately the mechanic who took the car apart is long gone. I have come across the attached part marked N540241 - but I can not figure out what it is or where it comes from. Ideas and suggestions welcome. George |
Looks like throttle linkage to me to Carb balance bar
|
It is the Ignition advance and retard control lever which mounts on the engine bulkhead
|
It is the advance/retard lever.the longer part has the dashboard pull wire clamped to it ,the shorter has a double ball joint bar attached to the distributer. It is bulkhead mounted.

George ,
It is an ignition advance /retard transfer lever that is bolted to the engine side of the firewall . There is a rod approx 14 inches long attached to the short end of the lever that connects to the clamping plate of the distributor . A cable from the "I" knob on the dash goes through the firewall and is attached to the long end of the lever . When the "I" knob is pulled it moves the distributor , thus retarding the ignition. I hope this explanation is clear enough . If not someone with a 401 can post a photo of it insitu for you. Geoff |
Gentlemen many thanks for all your feedback. If anyone can take a take a photo of where it is mounted on the firewall I would very much appreciate it.
When I bought the car it was fitted with a 6 cylinder Triumph engine. We have now found a replacement Bristol engine but I am missing the rod that connects to the distributor. George . |
