Steering Lock Removal 411
 
Happy New Year every one

The key in my 411 wont turn from the locked position. I have tried CRC etc etc no luck. My next step is to remove the steering wheel and the various covers.

My question how do I remove the switch and lock and where do I go for a replacement. I have heard they are off an Early Range Rover.

Any help much appreciated

Peter,

I had a similar problem on one of my other cars. The key had worn slightly along the biting cuts on the blade of the key, resulting in them not connecting with the tumblers inside the lock.

Fortunately my key had a reference number stamped onto the head of the key which my locksmith was able to trace and locate on the internet and subsequently produced a new key to the exact original specification. It took him approximately 15 minutes to find the spec and cut the new key.

The other alternative is to contact a locksmith to try and release the lock but that is only a short term solution.

Having Received No Advice On How To Go About Removing The Steering Lock I Decided To Soldier On In The Dark.

First I Removed The Steering Wheel Using A Home Made Puller
I Also Removed The Steering Column Covers. This Enabled Me To See Clearly The Steering Lock.

The Lock Looked The Same As An Early Range Rover And Should Have Been Easy To Remove Just Undo The Two Bolts Holding The Collar In Place.

This Is Where Things Got Hard The Range Rover Fitted The Lock With The Bolts Pointing Down And The Key Coming In From The Left Hand Side. But Not Bristol TheY Turned It Up Side Down With The Key Coming In From The Right. As A Result Of This The Bolts Were Pointing Up And Hard Up Against The Bottom Of The Instrument Binnicle.

All This Meant That The Binnacle And All The Instuments Had To Be Removed ( Quite A Job,dont Forget To Label Each Wire.)
The Next Problem Was To Undo The 2 Bolts Which Are So Designed
That When Done Up The Heads Break Off Which Is Done To Stop Would Be Thieves . You Need A Punch To Tap The Bolt Anti Clockwise.

Now Remove The Lock And Fit The New One . I Replaced The Security Bolts With Normal Bolt .

From Here On Just Fit Every Thing Back Into Place

I am not sure of the Landrover number but I found on ebay uk
Paul Light Landrover . They are selling what apears to be a genuine part its number is NRC 8279 100 pound and mention 1984 to 1992 . It looks right but the dates are confusing

Rather I would sugest NRC3222 1970 to 1986 51.99 pound . This is an aftermarket part the same as I used,it works well and is a little easier to use as you dont have to press the key in to turn it to lock. This feature has no downside. Try ebay supplier Craftedovals (8281) or search Range Rover Classic Steering Lock.
