Location of Engine Number on 1967 409?
 

Does anyone know where the engine number is located on the original 318 motor in the 1967 Bristol 409?

Also, does anyone know the relationship of this number and the number on the Bristol vehicle id plate? The number on the plate (B-318-06-27S) seems to be more of a general series and the engine number would be more specific, I guess.

Hello, you will find the engine number of a 409 under the alternator, on
the front left side of the block (looking at it from the front of the car),
like you can see here:

Removing the alternator and cleaning/painting the metal of that small part
of the engine block will allow you to see it clearly.

As far as I know, the engine number has no relation with the chassis number.

There are many sources on the Internet for guides to identifying
Mopar engines and the location of their "numbers". This is pretty good:

Note on this page is a note about the "story" that Chrysler was
"hand-assembling" their 318 engines for the fuel-injected 1981-83
Imperial. Sound familiar?

Stefano is correct, I found the engine number behind the dipstick and it matches the number on the Bristol ID plate - in this case, the number is B-318-06-27S. There my still be a Chrysler factory casting number and build date on the side of the block above the freeze plugs but I do not know for sure.

Stefano, have you seen the casting number and date on the side of your engine?

it is amazing to see that my engine has almost the same numbers as yours,
only the 'S' in your block opposed to the 'A' in mine. Maybe somebody will
enlighten us about this difference.


I didn't check the engine block numbers when I removed the engine from the
car because I didn't know there were any to check....but I found the 727
gearbox number and I was pleased to see that this number, too, match the
numbers listed on the original 'Advice of Despatch' of my car.
