They're easy to find for the 383 and 400 engines, but not sure about the 313/318. It might be cheaper to order one direct from the US though.

If no one else chips in with some pointers try a google search for "gear reduction starter" maybe with some words like chrysler and/or poly

The only problem is Chrysler made these things many years ago, and you really want a modern one.

These guys look like they may be able to help;
Race Car Starters, High Torque & Mini Starters, Gear Reduction Starters

Hi Greg, The only problem I had with the car was the starter motor which at
times used to have a intermittent problem turning the engine, I did take
it off but could find no reason why it did not work every time.
Subsequently, I did here that the person who had it after me had a complete
failure when it split in half.
A more modern one with reduction gearing sounds like a better bet.
Regards, and good luck.

I have a 411-7526, and bought my reduction starter motor from here (USA):

Motor City Reman (motorcityreman@comcast.net)

I think 'CALIFORNIA BOB' - recommended this.

Mine has been in my car for about 3 years and I have had no problems.

Thanks John,

I am aware that starters are easy to find for the engines in the 408 MK 2 onwards but the 313 seems to be very rare.

Greg,
I tried to find one a while back A 318 unit is quite easy to source, but the
313 unit has a different flange and pinion

I found one company who could maybe make the flange and pinion, but no
certainty or price.

I stripped my standard unit cleaned it cleaned the comm and bedded in new
brushes. I also stripped the solenoid and cleaned the contacts and fitted a
heavier cable. I also refitted the earth cable. So far no problems. Starting
problems are seldom the motor itself, but all the associated other elements.

I'm surprised there's a difference between the 313 and 318, they are essentially the same engine, although the transmission did change between the 408 and 408 Mk2 - maybe that's why the flange is different?

Either that or the starter you were looking at David was for a 318 LA engine, and not the older A engine which Bristol used.

Unfortunately many people refer to the LA engine as an A engine, which is guaranteed to cause confusion!

407 and 408 mk1 have the cast iron gear box and later cars have alloy.

Have you checked with the US aftermarket suppliers (anything in Hemmings?) and the various links from the Mopar sites? Although the 313 series A engine was not common, even in the USA, there is a wealth of suppliers out there and someone must be doing them. When I last had a 408 (the Mark I) there were a couple of suppliers — I think one was in Canada — who still did these and quite a few spares for the cast-iron gearbox.

Can someone on the other side of the Atlantic supply refs.?

Maybe because it was a Canadian engine

The US of course got the bigger 318, because Chrysler kept the Canadian Plodge (Plymouth/Dodge) owners and dealers one step behind the US market.

Even on the Mopar forums you may not get much in the way of responses re the 313, but you will get more response asking about the 318 poly head engine.

What we need to do is establish if the 407/408 Mk1 starter is the same as the 408 Mk2/409/410 starter.

The Bristol part number for the 408 Mk2/409/410 starter was 2095150. If this is a match with the part# for the 407/408 Mk1 starter, then it is probably safe to just search for a 318 starter ("A" series, or poly head).

Does anyone have a parts list for the 407/408 Mk1 ?

An aside to Kevin, didn't that book I sent you of specifications feature the 407/408? It's been so long ago I forget.

Spare Parts lists are obtainable from the reprint secretary of the BOC.
The starter motor on the 313 is given in the spares manual as 2095400.
I hope this is helpfull,

Bummer, that's a different number, which means we can't assume the starters are the same.

It would be good to get the 407/408 Mk1 parts list into the public domain. Do the BOC sell parts lists to non members?

If anyone has the list and is willing to scan it I would be happy to put it on this site (as I did with the 408Mk2/409/410 parts lists). Alternatively if someone can send it to me I will scan it and send it back.

Peter, I can't remember either, but none of the books have part numbers in them for the V8 cars.

Hi,
.
It is a book, same size as the red owners manual, easy way pay BOC membership and get cheap reprint about 100 pages including breakdown diagrams.
I have two, one mint from the AA collection, one came with the car, and I have a reprint from BOC, very cheap.
.

Hi Greg,
As you know I am a bit "crook" at the moment and am not allowed to drive or lift anything.
My gardener comes tomorrow so I will ask him to move the 407 and get the starter motor indoors so I can 'photograph it. That is if he comes! It might snow.
Carol dare not drive it out of the garage as she has never driven the 407 or shown any inclination to do so!. One good reason for looking at the power steering we were talking about.
.
Kind regards,
.Nick

Three starters were ordered and two are fitted and working. One on a 407 and one on a 408. They work superb and are a doddle to fit.

Nic will have his when back from holiday.

Well worth the search by Dave Taylor and the work he put in with Hot Heads USA

All the usual benefits of a lot less battery needed for a much stronger turn over of the engine.
