407 tappets

Hi all
Anyone know the correct tappet clearances for the 407 please ?

Nick Challacombe 02-03-11 05:29 PM

407 Tappet clearance (hot)

The 407 tappet clearance should be adjusted when at full operating temperatures
0.010 inch Intake
0.018 inch Exhaust

The adjustment is made at the self locking rocker arm adjusting screw.
This screw should have a min of 3 ft/lbs. tension as it is turned.
If less than this, replace the adjusting screw and if necessary, the rocker arm.

The above quoted verbatum from the factory workshop manual.

And you can disconnect one bank of four plugs to slow the revs down a bit !

I have detailed instructions for this and other 407 maintenence procedures in the Newnes Moror Repair Manual that you are welcome to borrow / copy.

Brian Marelli at the Bristol Service Centre is always very helpful.

Oily job

Also as Greg implies, the best way of getting really good results is to adjust them withe the engine running! A large piece of cardboard in front of you helps!.
Great fun but a bit OTT.

I agree, I got a fairly good result on my 408 using one of those old SPQR (?) adjusters when the valves were hot and doing a bank at a time (then running to get the other bank back up to temperature).

When I did them conventionally with the engine running, I got the best result but quite a lot of engine oil seemed to find its way on to the exhaust mannifolds . . .

407 tappet adjustment

Thanks Nick and Greg. Sounds like i need to get a new supply of Swarfega if I'm to do it with the engine running ! Beats making mud pies though by the sound of it !

A loan to copy (or copy), of the Newnes Repair Manual would be much appreciated Greg. Thanks.
