how to dismantle the 411 clock?
 

Having dismantled my dash to hopefully help Richard out, I decided I may as well clean up the glass on my clock. Unfortunately it has collected some grime on the inside of the glass!

Does anyone know how these things come apart?

There are two screws on the back which I removed but that just allows the mechanism to move around inside the metal canister, so it seems that I need to take the bezel off to get the glass out. There is no obvious way to do this.

Also, there's the adjuster knob which goes through the glass.

Does anyone have any experience with these things?

Although the clock says Smiths on the front, it says Jaeger on the back.

Typically you have to pry up the sides of the chrome outer ring. This goes for most instruments. Carefully and not damaging / crimping the ring. The adjusting bezel should just pull out.
The difference between the manufacturing names is to confuse you!

After scanning that document I've come to the conclusion that life is too short to repair your own speedo ....

It says "first remove the metal bezel and the glass." That's helpful ;)

At least I've found some LED replacements for the old filament bulbs which used to illuminate the instruments (many of which have blown on my car).

The dificult part is to remove the instruments from the dashboard...

When removing (prying away) the bezel, it is important to work in small increments, going progressively all around the circumference.

If you remove the bezel/glass, do not just clean the glass, but do the rest of the mechanism too. Simple!. No need to take the internals apart, just clean with one of the sprays that do not leave residue behing, and lubricate.

Can you let me know which LED bulbs you used? I want to do this upgrade on mine...and those green lights are just useless - has anyone improved them?

Sure Halfords have them too

Remember that LED bulbs need the full 12v so will not work with rheostats such as the dash light dimmer -- unless it's full on.

Do you know the reference for the bulbs? I went into Halfords with 2 examples of mine from the headlamp blue warning and the smaller bulbs used in the green side bulbs and they were totally unhelpful - nah mate, never seen one of them was the response.
