Bristol Cars and Engines
Hi all -
A funny thing happened on the way to Amazon... I finally got motivated last week to buy the new Bristol book from Amazon (US) and searched their site for "Bristol". Near the Balfour listing was "Bristol Cars and Engines" by Setright at nearly the same price - or about 1/3 of the lowest price I've previously seen. It was a used, ex-library copy, but I ordered it. The seller was near to Los Angeles and I received it this week. Good condition, formerly in the Azusa library. It's nice to have, but I'll entertain offers around the average addall.com price (is anyone actually paying $600 for a copy?). Bob |
I have bought two at $600 but one is for regular reading, next to my Gideon bible, and the other is to display at concourse car shows. I have been informed that cheaper copies may be counterfeit.
The fakes are very good but are a slightly lighter shade of blue on the cover and the bindings will collapse over time due to being made in sweat shops in Tasmania. Greg |

Almost as good as owning more than one Bristol-engined car, but with much less maintenance. Come to think of it, I'd swap my new copy for another copy of "The Postwar Frazer Nash". They (the Amazon Books) are not the Palawyn Press one published in 1999 I
think, as a 2 folio book. It is call Bristol "A Private Car" The one refered to can be picked up quite often on UK ebay at £100.00 or so and a 1st edition at that. "You can tell these books by their cover," one is A5 size or just a bit bigger with a Red cover, no dust sleeve and gold lettering. The other is in a slip case with two volumes A4 or bigger, mine is in a black case with a Bristol Badge on the front. Palawan still is selling the 2 volume Setright book, according to their website: "A Private Car – An Account of the Bristol" By L. K. Setright Awarded the Montagu of Beaulieu Trophy by the Guild of Motoring Writers 1999. Setright’s Bristol book is essentially an account of all cars that have borne the name Bristol. You can pick up Bristol cars and engines for £100.00, I defy you to find "Bristol A Private Car2 for that Kind of price, if so I will buy it for £50.00 as many as you can find! Please let me know when you find one, mine cost £600.00 new in 1999. My Bristol Cars and engines cost me £60.00 in 1999. Â. No contest! Â. Every month at least one copy of Bristol Cars and Engines comes up on UK ebay and have fetched, at most £200.00 and one went for £60.00 last year, not a first edition. Â. The fact is that asking prices vary wildly on the collectible book market depending upon supply and demand, and whether it's a dealer or an individual selling the book, and how keen they are to sell. Furthermore the quality of the content often has no bearing on the price.

Bristol-related and other old books
Hi all -
To clarify my earlier message about the asking price for Bristol related books, anyone can check this by looking at addall.com (which is the best site I know to look for any old book on the Internet). There are currently 21 entries for "Bristol Cars and Engines" under the "used" book tab, with "Setright" as the author and "Bristol" as keyword, ranging from $223 to $600. I am amazed. In the same search, there are 3 entries for "A Private Car: An Account of the Bristol" ranging from $600 to $832, This seems to be a higher price than the standard copy as advertised by Palawan as available. I've only obtained a few books through addall.com, but always check this source first. Bob PS There is an annual "swap meet" of automotive literature in the Los Angeles area the last Sunday in June. I've been going to it for about 20 years. Less vendors in the last few years. The current location is the NHRA museum in Pomona. |

I'm getting a bit lost in this thread - but the original cover was
not blue but darkish red grained in black. The Tassie items are unknown to me. Sean |
