Thanks for the thoughts.

The problem with my speedo cable was that the outer had been rubbing on the bell housing and had worn through to the inner cable. As I attempted to pull it through the firewall the outer broke in half.

Fortunately I have found a firm in Sydney who will repair the outer by making up a sleeve, joining the broken pieces together and refitting the inner at the right length. I will lodge a photo on the forum when I can.
