Image Uploading and Resizing |
Do you own the copyright?
If you do not own the copyright in an image, please consider the rights of the
owner when uploading photos. Most copyright owners will not object to
'reasonable use' of their images and text. However, reproduction of very
detailed images of copyrighted images or complete sections of readable text are
unlikely to be considered reasonable use and may result in complaints or worse
from a copyright owner.

The following directions apply to Windows XP – if you are running a different operating system
some steps may vary.
Click “Browse” in the “Pictures to upload” section.
A “Choose file” window will appear. Navigate to the directory containing your photos. Using the thumbnail view, choose a photo to upload. NB: Please read the next section before trying to upload an image!
|
 |
Before you go any further please check that the file size is within the site’s allowable limit of 700kb per file (larger uploads will fail).
The easiest way to check file size is to position your mouse pointer over a thumbnail image or filename, a small box should appear which shows this information. In this example the file size is 912KB which is too big. Note that the image dimensions are also shown.
|
 |
The image dimensions should be no more than 2048 pixels high by
2048 pixels wide. The site will attempt to resize any image larger than this, however you are likely to get better results if you resize it before uploading.
NB: The maximum permissible image size has been increased to 2048 x 2048 to cater for larger photos and items such as
diagrams or charts which contain detailed information.
Although 2048 x 2048 is the maximum allowed image size, it should not
be necessary for most pictures. For example, the pictures shown in the example
on the right would display the wheel more than adequately at 640 x 480 pixels. A
photo of a car will display well at 1024 x 1024 pixels.
The next section shows how to resize a file and change the image size.
If this is all gobbledygook to you, just email your photos to webmaster@bristolcars.info with a few words about what the photos and are where you want them to go and I will take care of it for you.
On a PC running Windows XP, by far the easiest way to resize your images is by installing ‘ImageResizer’ which is one of Microsoft’s collection of
‘Power Toys’ - click here to go to the Microsoft site
(scroll down the page and look for ImageResizer.exe on the right hand side).
Note: Although we use ImageResizer , we do not warrant the suitability of this application to your own system!
As an alternative we recommend using Adobe Photoshop Elements or IrfanView (free) to manipulate
images.
|
 |
With ImageResizer installed, simply right click on an image in the
“Choose file” window and select “Resize Image” from the menu.
The ImageResizer control will appear (as shown). |
 |
Click “Advanced” and select “Make images smaller but not larger”. Select size “Medium (fits a 800 x 600 screen)”, then click ‘Okay’.
Scroll down the “Choose File” window and you will see that a new image has been created called “your_filename (Medium).jpg”.
Select this newly created image and click ‘Open’ to insert it into the “Pictures to upload” section.
Update 24/02/14: Max image size has been increased to 2048 x 2048
pixels. This means pictures can be resized using the "Large" option in
ImageResizer, in which case the new image will be “your_filename (Large).jpg”
NB: The 400Kb file size limit still applies although this is easily
large enough for the maximum image size without loss of visible image quality on
screen.
If using Photoshop/Elements to resize your images, first use the Image Resize
function to set the pixel size, then the "Save for Web" function and save as GIF
format or JPEG. When using JPEG try changing the quality to reduce the
file size. A quality setting of 70% is usually acceptable while maintaining a
reasonable file size.
|
 |
Repeat the steps above if you want to upload more pictures (you can upload up to three pictures at a time). Then click “Upload Pictures”. Please be patient while pictures upload, the delay will be dependent on the size or the files, your ‘upstream’ internet connection speed, sever load and the weather. :) |
 |
And finally, hit upload. |
