When you move away from the original design it's obviously all down to personal taste.

I am hoping to stay within the original parameters by using L.E.Ds.
I have made units that will fit in the original lamps and give me stop/tail, reverse and indicators. Not much heat from L.E.Ds and very low power drain.

From the safety angle, the more light at the back the better and also the nearer to the outside of the car.

Not sure if there are any dictating legal requirements but I don't suppose you would run into any problems in that direction
