Default Fitting Halogen/Quartz to PF770's

Hi, has anyone any experience of fitting modern bulbs to an old tripod style pf770?

I have 7" headlights on my 401 but I wish to fit original PF770 tripod headlights, which I already have. However, its been 40 years since I messed with PF770's and my memory is not that long - HELP!

Bob

Anthony Pearson at Classic and Vintage Bulbs (in Adelaide, Australia) Home Page has a Q/H bulb for the prefocus base (the one in the PF770). This is a simple replacement.
I tried it, and it did make the lights very much brighter (much better than the previous dim glow). However, it did rather highlight the poor reflector design - the lights were more like flamethrower spotlights with rather poor spread/coverage.
I reverted to a modern 7 inch headlight that takes H4 bulbs - much, much better for driving, and can be set up with a nice pattern that doesn't dazzle other drivers.

regards

Julian

In the classic biking world we use Paul Goff

Paul Goffs classic motorcycle & car parts site

He has a large range of modern lights to fit BPF units

I have used bulbs bought from Paul Goff in a Bentley Mk6 and R type, they fit perfectly to the original bulb holders and are a very worthwhile improvement.

Thanks everyone,

Julian, it is probably 40 years since I messed with PF770's and I remember the long narrow beam. However, I have acquired several and wish to try them but with Quartz Halogen. They are the right look on my 401 but you are probably right about the beam etc. but until I've tried them for myself I won't be satisfied.

I am also intending to upgrade the fog lights as on 90 degree bends in the dark not even my 7" round headlights are much good.

Regards all
