Hoverjohn ,
Are you John ??

The head 1905 was originally fitted to 401 chassis 996
The block 1753C was originally fitted to 401 chassis 691

Did you buy these from the Brian May auction ?

Could you please advise the chassis number of your 403 and post a photo of it on this Forum .

Thanks and good luck with the restoration

Geoff

I will post more when I pick it up but basically it’s missing all the engine ancillaries and connecting stuff and push rods/rocker covers/mounts rocker covers engine needs rebuilding etc.

Car is up north apparently it’s known to the club?

Ta.

Hello John.

Can you get to the Concours in Oxford on Sunday? I'm sure you will get plenty of help there. Otherwise feel free to send a private message and call or meet up for a chat.
I'm about to rebuild a similar engine so getting back up to date on prices and availability of parts.

So I’ve got the Car!! After a bit of poking about I found a (new) log book in the glove box and a number plate in the boot! Turns out it’s actually a 1951 401 that’s been rebadged 403 and had an anti roll bar and the Ali fin brakes added. However it’s definitely a 401 as it’s got the old style shocks not the telescopic ones like on the 403. I’m guessing it was to flog it for more at some point or trick someone into thinking it had the 100 engine in. .

Plates match the v5.

It’s chassis 401/828
Car no 401/237
Engine was once 85C/1645
1951
I even have a reg.

Any other information in any record books anywhere?

The good news is that the gearbox and engine and head I have are now the right type!

JB

Have you found the workshop manuals and spares manual on the BODA site?

If you haven't then that should be your first step. Quite the most comprehensive I have seen for any car.

There is a workshop manual available on CD for the 400/401/402/403 from a supplier in the US on eBay, the listing number is copied below and the current price is £22.30 + £9.72 for p&p. I have have bought two in the past one for me and one for a local engineer who helps me occasionally. The reproduction quality is excellent and you can print pages out as needed or have it on the lap top in the workshop.
However there is also an original workshop manual for these cars on eBay at the moment for £275, a lot more but a bargain compared to what I have seen these change hands for in the past.

Default V5 is back! But…

Hi my V 5 is back but it’s fairly blank with no model I.D. etc on it and it states that it was first registered in 1979 but declared manufactured 1951? Is there any way to work out where my Bristol was from 1951 to 1979 if not in U.K.? Or who ordered it etc etc. is there some form of master of the records to approach with a burning goblet to receive enlightenment ?

Bit dissapointed. The CD is really for the 400. No parts book for the 401 or 403

I am sorry but you need to look at the disc again, The workshop manual on it is the copy of the full and final version of the 400,401,402 & 403 publication which runs into hundreds of pages and covers virtually every aspect of how to work on the cars, Its exactly the same as the printed reproduction copy of the final version of the original workshop manual I bought from Bristol Cars.
The only items specifically for the 400 on the cd are the parts book and the service sheets though some of the latter are applicable to features on the later cars as well, also the specification table in that section covers the 400,401 & 402.
The most important document on these CD's is the workshop manual which if purchased in this format saves hundreds of pounds compared with buying a printed copy.
