Angry 401 engine gurus in Somerset?

I have a 1952 401 which is blowing a bit of smoke, and feels a bit low on power once it gets to 60MPH. I have replaced much of the ignition & fuel system but now fear rings or valves or worse.

Can anyone recommend a Bristol 6 cyl whizz not too far from Yeovil/Taunton? I'm told there may be someone in Mere & Cricklade (Wilts) but am hoping for someone a bit closer.

Thanks in advance.

Default Bristol 401 low on power

Before doing anything else, take the car to a competent shop and ask for a compression test of all the cylinders. The factory service manual should give that specification, but without that data, look for about 150 PSI as a starting point, perhaps lower, but all cylinders should be within 15 pounds of each other. Now, it the compression is good, then it may be a simple matter of the engine not getting enough fuel or air. Could be the carbs or just the fuel pump or a clogged filter.

Default the bristol down on power

Footnote on the bit of smoke out the back: It may simply need new valve seals. A bit of a job for a good mechanic, but much cheaper than an overhaul of the engine. Good luck.

If, and it is an if, you require a Bristol specialist my view is to use Spencer Lane Jones in Warminster. Yes he may be a way away from you, he probably isn't the cheapest you'll find, but had two of my friends gone to him at the onset of problems as I advised, they would have saved thousands between them.

I sent a 603 to him years ago, a fair amount later spent on the suspension, work I couldn't even see, the car was literally transformed.

I can't commend his company highly enough. Worth every penny.

And no, I'm not on commission!

Brabazon Motors in Bristol have started up to work on Bristol cars and the company is made up of former Bristol Car employees. They have just refitted my back window and wood surround and fitted rear wheel bearings and oil seals as well as several other jobs.

Obviously very knowledgeable about Bristol Cars.
