408 chassis No 7001
After about 25yrs of joyous ownership it's time to pass this car on to it's next guardian. Not an easy thing to do on any level, emotionally I knew it would be hard, I had admired Bristol since I saw them at Earls Court as a boy and subsequently learned about them as car crazed kids do, I remember being a little choked when I picked the car up from Chelsea Cars in Hammersmith.
When I started thinking about how I was going to sell it I was shocked to discover that I had no idea how to go about it. I have no idea of it's value and don't know how to find out, we are in very isolated Perth, Western Australia. The car is chassis No 1, does that mean anything to anyone and does it make a difference. To sell a car "back when" all you did was place an add in the specialist press but apparently that's no good any more and you have to use the internet but you hear such terrible stories about scammers and how do you seperate a discerning man from his hard earned when he's in Boston [Lincs or Mass] and the car's in Oz? I'm at a loss, if any body can share their experiences, good or bad, I'd be very pleased to hear from them. |

Hello, As the V8 cars are relatively rare in Australia, there's little to go by as regards prices here. There was one a while back which had been partially stripped for A$15K. From my recollection, a 409 was on offer for about A$30K about 5 years ago and a very nice car was on offer for about A$58K. Have you asked a local specialist dealer for a price? I tried here in SA and the chap had no idea on a V8 car
There's always a lot of hype about rising markets and looking at UK prices, the cars seem to be on sale for higher prices, but it's all about condition as repairs can swallow up a pile of money on paintwork, trim and chassis work. With the falling Aussie dollar, you might find a buyer worldwide, but buying a car from another country is fraught with issues, even when you get a survey done, as few will know what to look for, unless they are familiar with the models. I had a buyer of an Alvis seek a survey from a widely advertised company. It cost him about A$500 and lasted an hour, including a fag break and he had no idea of where the weaknesses lay. My advice would be to advertise it via the Bristol Owners Club Australia, Just Cars and Unique Cars. I've a fairly nice 409 ( no A/c or PS) but retrimmed and running well I'd be thinking of asking about A$40K if I wanted to sell it, but asking a price is one thing and getting it another! On the point of it being Chassis no 1, personally I'd see that of little consequence, but I could be wrong. Best regards |
