Default 407 heater valve

Hi Bristolers,

My heater control valve, which is under the bonnet (hood), attached to the heater matrix box is leaking when switched off.

I have spoken to BCL and Brian does not know what car it came from.
It is a Smiths and I cannot see it being made for just Bristol.

I have tried Sports Car supplies and sent them 'photos but they say it is not from an MGB or Triumph which was Brian Marrelli's thought.

Any help would be appreciated as driving around with the heater full on is not fun in this weather.

Thank you in advance,

Nick

Nick,

Try loading photo up to web site so we can ll take a look and perhaps
someone will recognise it's origins.

I was just about to say the same thing. Nick, if you have trouble uploading a photo, send it to webmaster-at-bristolcars.info and I will upload it for you (in the antipodean morning).

I take it Brian doesn't have any? (which is a bit of a worry)

If it's the same as the 408-411 then it's similar to those used on the Astons, but unfortunately not quite the same (different mounting style). However, it will be the diaphragm that has perished and those valves do come apart, so in a worst case scenario you could buy one for a DB6 and use it's innards to renovate your valve.

If your 407 is similar to my 408 try Daimler or Rover.
If you put a hose clamp on the hose meantime it would save driving in
your swimwear!
Alternatively some BL cars fitted a manual valve on the head for
isolaton.

Thanks Kevin,

Tried that route but the 407/8 has two controls.
Brian does not have any and indeed does not have a clue as to which car they
came from.
I even spoke to Brian May but the state of the 407 he has just obtained for
spares is too far gone.
I will attempt to upload but will send to you I think as I am still a bit
clueless.

From a muggy 24.5C. But sunny.

I have a few photos (see below) of the valve on a 408 and a 411. It appears that on the 408 (green car) that there is only one cable. On the 411 that is certainly the case. So maybe the valve on the 407 was different from the later V8 cars.

Whatever you do don't undo the screws which hold the heater valve bracket to the heater box - the nuts behind are NOT retained!

Incidentally, I have just been through the parts list for the 408-410 and I can't find that valve!

From a brief look at the photo and my 1963 Alvis TD21, the valve on the
Bristol and the Alvis look to be the same, except the Alvis valve is on
the right side . It has the flange to body and same outlet.
I believe that Red Triangle at Kenilworth may have stock - I recall they
were advertising " repros" of one models heater valve a while back

This second cable on Nick's valve is puzzling me. I can't think why it would be required, because there's only one valve. I can only guess that they didn't use the same solid cables on the 407. The point being that the solid core control cable is able to push the valve actuator as well as pull it.

Nick, are you absolutely sure that lower cable is connected to the valve?

I have attached some detailed photos of a valve from an Aston. I suspect the internals are interchangeable. From memory I think the original one which came off my DB6 had a separate diaphragm spring, but if you take yours apart you should be able to see whether the diaphragm with the retained spring will work as a replacement in your valve body.

You might be able to buy that diaphragm separately, but even if you can't do that, you can buy the Spitfire/GT6 valve for circa £20 and just use the parts.

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you all for your help, it just shows how wonderful these Forums are.

ACCS Martin Barns emailed me to say he had a new one in stock!
It is the correct one with two cables and a rod.
One cable is the heater control and the other is demist.

Whilst he was on he informed me he stock all glass including 411
heated rear screens, all suspension, gearbox, axles etc..

Why I did not ask him is that I thought he only did the yank parts.

Anyway well done Martin.

I believe the valve may be the same as that used on the Triumph 2000 (1963-69).

How much was it Nick?

£36.00 plus VAT, but at least I know it is the right one.
When I asked a Triumph specialist he said that his only had one cable
to it. So I left it, he was asking £28.00
I thought better safe than sorry, after all Martin supplies them to
Bristol cars, he also supplies them with glass he says!
Thank again fot all your help.

Couldn't see one for a 407 ;-)

Nick, can you take a nice close up photo (or 2) of your valve before you fit to the car and post them here (or send them to me) and we shall see if we can identify it. It could of course be unique to the Bristol 407.

Kevin

PS. large photos.

Hi Kevin,
*
I did try that route as I pointed out in my first mailing, the Ebay one that is but the trouble was the demist controls.
I have not yet received the part but when I do*I will take part numbers and photograph, a bigger size as a luddite, what is the next size 640x640 ?
*
It should fit a 408 and at a guess a 409.

Default 407 heater valve, eBay

Hi Richard, Not completely certain but UK eBay item 290326979175 for
a Sunbeam Alpine looks pretty close. I'm looking at the fitting to
the heater matrix, which is the O-ring type with flange, position of
control cable and the other water connection. The Sunbeam one (and
all others advertised) do however have a pressed steel cover on the
control cable side rather than the original die cast version, maybe
when sprayed black it will look OK. Otherwise I might try and fix
the original die cast cover to the new valve as that part of mine is
OK, it's the other side that has corroded away.

Confirmation later when my sister in UK procures it and ships it to NZ...

Further to earlier posts regarding the limiting straps on the rear
axle of the 405 and other 2 litres.... I used some similar width tie
down strapping rated at 1 ton, cut to length, after a few trips in
the NZ mud I'm sure they will look fairly original...

Default 407 heater valve

Hi all,
In my thanks to all who helped me with the heater valve, I said that
ACCS supplied glass to Bristol cars. Toby Silverton has spoken to me
and said that he had indeed had a couple of screen from ACCS to cover
a shortfall but that was all.
I hope that clarifies the situation.
Toby S says it is his intention to hold all parts for every Bristol ever
made.

If you are sending it to me directly webmaster-at-bristolcars.info, you can send as large an image as you like, I can always crop and/or resize to suit the site. Within reason, bigger is better.

What "situation" ?

I thought we are talking about 407 heater valves! Has he bought some of those from ACCS as well?
